Behind the

Built by Photographers, for Photographers

Liquid Light Lab is an independent photographic film laboratory based in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, providing professional film developing and scanning services to photographers throughout the United Kingdom.

We specialise in 35mm and 120 medium format photography, processing colour negative film, ECN-2 motion-picture stocks and traditional black-and-white emulsions.

But there's something important about where our laboratory began. We were photographers long before we became a film lab, and that influences everything we do.

A negative is more than a piece of developed material. It holds decisions made by the photographer: where to place the exposure, how to interpret the available light, what detail matters and what can be left in shadow.

Those decisions deserve to be respected when the film reaches the lab.

Liquid Light Lab grew from our own experience of shooting analogue film, experimenting with different emulsions, understanding photographic chemistry and searching for better ways to translate negatives into digital images.

Rather than accepting the limitations of conventional lab scanning, we developed our own approach, combining professional photographic equipment with a purpose-built capture system.

The result is a laboratory where the people processing and scanning your film understand what it means to stand behind the camera.

The Science Behind the Photograph

Film photography brings together chemistry, optics, light and timing. Small differences during development and scanning can influence the final result.

Our laboratory works with three principal processes:

C-41 Colour Negative

For colour negative films from Kodak, Fujifilm, Harman, Lomography and other manufacturers, using controlled colour development chemistry.

ECN-2 Motion Picture Film

A genuine ECN-2 development process for compatible motion-picture colour negative stocks, preserving the processing characteristics intended for those emulsions.

Traditional Black & White

Black-and-white film processing using carefully selected developers, including 510 Pyro, with an emphasis on negative quality, tonal reproduction and scanning flexibility.

Each film type has its own characteristics and requirements. Understanding those differences is part of the work we do.

We don't believe every photograph should look the same. A beautifully exposed roll of Kodak Portra, a tungsten-balanced motion-picture film and a roll of Ilford HP5 Plus all have something different to offer.

Our role is to develop the negative faithfully and provide a scan that gives you control over the finished photograph.

Scanning Without Compromise

Because the negative is only half the story.

Developing the film reveals the photograph. Scanning determines how much of that photograph is carried into its digital form.

Our Liquid Light Chamber is a specialist capture system built around a high-resolution imaging platform and precision macro optics.

For 35mm film, we offer scans of approximately 60 megapixels. For medium format, our UltraScan service uses advanced pixel-shift capture to produce files exceeding 200 megapixels on suitable formats.

Development-and-scan customers receive both high-resolution JPEG files and 16-bit TIFF files, allowing them to enjoy their images immediately or work extensively with the captured information in their preferred editing software.

We believe photographers should have the freedom to make their own creative decisions.

Your negatives. Your photographs. Your interpretation.

A Laboratory Connected to the Film Community

Analogue photography thrives because people continue to explore it, share what they learn and create work with it.

Beyond developing and scanning film, we're actively involved in the photographic community through technical experimentation, film testing, educational content and photography events.

Liquid Light Lab is also a Candido Technical Partner and Ambassador, supporting the exploration and use of motion-picture-derived photographic film.

Our involvement with film doesn't stop at the lab door. We shoot it, test it, write about it and work with the people helping to keep analogue photography moving forward.

Through The Cinematic Notebook, we share our experience of photographic equipment, lenses, film stocks and processes for photographers who want to understand more about the medium.

Independent

We're an independent lab, not a photographic retail chain. Our focus is on providing a specialist developing and scanning service, investing in the equipment and processes that influence the results, and offering photographers a straightforward way to have their film processed.

Our lab is a working production environment rather than a retail shop. Customers throughout the UK can order online and send their film to us by post, while local photographers can use our designated film drop-off facility.

Finished scans are delivered digitally, with negative return available by post.

Whether you're discovering film photography for the first time or have been shooting it for decades, you're welcome here.

Your Next Roll Starts Here

The photographs you make matter.

Some will become favourites. Others will teach you something. A few might surprise you completely.

Whatever is waiting on your film, we'd be delighted to help you discover it.
